Choosing a beautiful entry door that can prevent cold, water and noise is not easy. Beyond the aesthetic choices, there are a multitude of technical aspects to take into account to make the right choice in the doorway. House side guides you ...

A quality door must have three main characteristics: to be watertight, airtight and to isolate properly. To make an opinion, refer to the labels and technical documentation of the various manufacturers.

AEV, the guarantee of an effective sealing for the front door

A well insulated door from a thermal point of view will prove ineffective if the watertightness is not guaranteed. First check the product's AEV values (A as airtight, E as watertight and V as windproof) and look for the highest possible values. Perimeter joints, which guarantee watertightness, also reduce noise from the street. They must withstand everyday use: the "must" being the presence of a double peripheral seal.

Thermal insulation: the right Ud for the front door

The thermal insulation of a front door is determined by the area where you live and the orientation of the home, as you would for a window. Look for the lowest possible thermal transmittance (Ud). A UD of 1.7 W / m2.K is really a maximum: you can find much better. If you're designing a low-energy habitat, go for a Ud of less than 1. Watch out for evasive ads! Ask for the exact Ud value of the chosen door, which varies depending on the dimensions and components of the selected product.

Gateway: the points that make the difference

It is possible to obtain insulating doors in steel, aluminum, wood or PVC, because these products actually incorporate several materials with complementary performances (high-density foam, fiberglass, etc.). The entire door (frame, sill, frame, panel) must benefit from an effective thermal break, a true barrier to cold. The doors are often thicker. Be very careful when implementing. Please contact specialized installers with "Door and window installation" certification. Good insulation does not support any negligence.
