Strasbourg: Christmas capital!

François Goudier

The national cradle of this tradition, the Alsatian capital won the title of Best European Christmas Market for the second year. This 445th edition is an opportunity to savor the journey ...

See you in Strasbourg in Alsace, a place of great importance throughout Europe. As Christmas approaches, the city puts on its finest garlands and sumptuous finery to shine brightly. Christmas markets, illuminations, shows ... Dive into the heart of this city, a real festive place and emblem of the holiday season.

For Christmas, Strasbourg becomes a sparkling city

With the Great Island for lighthouse, all the districts of the Alsatian capital sparkle in the colors of Christmas. Ironically, if we consider that Christkindelsmärik, in other words the market of the Child Jesus, was established under the influence of Protestantism Strasbourg. Reforming, it ended, as early as 1570, at the market of Saint-Nicolas: exit the extravagances of the catholic traditions, giving preference to the names of the saints. What does austerity matter? Yes and no, at a time when COP21 is mobilizing countries to curb global warming. Like the Grand Sapin, a real Christmas postcard at Kleber Square, the municipal lights are made of LED garlands, generating electricity savings of 20 to 40%. Magic does not settle down at nightfall. From window displays to the façades of churches, through domestic windows and balconies, from the Porte des Lumières decorated with two stellar bears to the white crystal tree on the forecourt of Les Halles, the decorations embellish all the streets ...

Christmas in Strasbourg: a symbolic multicultural event

"Many people make the trip to live this multicolored enchantment," confirms Pascale Roehrig, a journalist with FIP (because the radio also transmits from Strasbourg). Indefatigable traveler, this Franco-German has yet seen all the colors. "What is magical is the surge of smiles and eyes that shine: so many illuminations, all-round." And this voice off, occasional, for Arte to add: "All the senses are mobilized. We must be listening: in tune with foreign accents, the sound is unique." What to say about smell! Gingerbread, mulled wine, orange, cinnamon, specialties perfume the trip, like a madeleine Proust. His favorite? "The hot, organic white wine of Charles Brand, not hard to find among the 300 cabins: this independent winemaker is known as the white wolf."

The finds of the Christmas market

Christmas gift, from Advent: not one, but 11 markets unfold in the Alsatian capital! While the place Gutenberg will highlight the guest of the year and its specialties, live from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for this 445th edition, the most historic markets will share, as usual, the Cathedral Square and Place Broglie. Bredele, pretzels and other sweet or savory local delicacies; traditional crafts carved, engraved as embroidered; vintage glass balls from Meisenthal, sternereje is magical "rain of stars", in dialect, among the traditional decorations: Strasbourg remains undeniably the capital of Christmas!
